How Fiverr works for freelancers and clients

Fiverr organizes freelance work around listed services called Gigs, with packages or custom offers becoming orders. The order record connects the listing, selected options, client requirements, messages, delivery, and payment workflow.

How the platform works

Start with the platform's operating model and access rules before comparing individual opportunities or profiles.

Freelancers publish defined services and packages. Clients discover them through search and filters, compare profiles and reviews, message freelancers, or accept a custom offer. Checkout creates an order that moves through requirements, work, delivery, review, and completion or resolution states.

Gig
A freelancer's public service listing, including scope, pricing, media, and delivery details.
Package
A preset service level with its own deliverables, price, delivery time, and revision allowance.
Custom offer
A project-specific offer sent in a conversation with defined scope, price, timing, and revisions.
Requirements
Information or files the client submits so the freelancer can begin the order.

Freelancer access

A freelancer completes onboarding and a profile, then creates eligible Gigs with accurate category, package, description, requirements, and gallery information.

Client access

A client can build a profile, search and filter Gigs, compare packages and seller evidence, message a freelancer, or submit a brief where available.

For freelancers

Fiverr works best when the listing filters for fit before purchase and the order record removes the last important ambiguities.

  1. Define one purchasable service

    Make the Gig title, category, outputs, exclusions, and examples consistent. Avoid promising an open-ended result at a fixed package price.

  2. Build meaningful packages

    Vary a clear dimension such as quantity, complexity, research, or handoff. State delivery time and included revisions.

  3. Ask useful requirements

    Request the brief, source material, dimensions, brand rules, access, and decision-maker details needed to begin without collecting unnecessary personal data.

  4. Clarify before committing

    When the request differs from the Gig, use a precise custom offer or recommend the correct package. Restate assumptions and dependencies.

  5. Deliver through the order

    Use the platform delivery action, label files clearly, explain what is included, and distinguish a covered correction from new scope.

For clients

A client should compare the exact package and freelancer evidence, then ensure the requirements and messages describe the real need.

  1. Search by deliverable and constraint

    Use category, budget, timing, style, language, and relevant filters to narrow the field without treating rankings as a substitute for review.

  2. Evaluate the whole listing

    Compare package details, portfolio relevance, profile, reviews, questions, delivery terms, and explicit exclusions.

  3. Message before buying when needed

    Ask about unusual formats, dependencies, commercial-use needs, or timing. Request a custom offer when the package is not a clean fit.

  4. Submit complete requirements

    Provide usable source files, brand constraints, references, access, and acceptance criteria. Redact unrelated customer, employee, or account data.

  5. Review against the order

    Check promised files and criteria, consolidate feedback into included revision rounds, and use the order workflow for delivery, extension, or resolution.

Before either side commits

Resolve the questions that change scope, price, schedule, rights, or risk before either side commits.

  • Does the selected package or custom offer name every required deliverable and file format?
  • Which client requirements must be supplied before work can begin?
  • What does one revision cover, and what request needs a new order or offer?
  • Is commercial use needed, and are third-party assets or licenses involved?
  • Does delivery depend on client feedback, access, or source material?
  • Can sensitive information be removed or replaced with a safer sample?

Terms, payment, ownership, and disputes

Read the order record together with Fiverr's Terms of Service and Payment Terms. Preserve the selected Gig or custom offer, package and extras, client requirements, and material messages. Separate written terms may also matter, but check them against Fiverr's rules.

What forms the agreement

The order should turn a service listing into a specific, testable commitment.

Gig or custom offer
Check the exact package, quantity, extras, price, delivery time, and included revisions. A custom offer should say what it changes from the public Gig.
Client requirements
The brief, source files, dimensions, brand rules, or access shape the work. Missing inputs can affect whether the delivery date and scope remain realistic.
Messages
Summarize material changes to scope, timing, or output in one message and ask the other party to confirm.

Payment, delivery, and revisions

Fiverr handles the payment flow, while order status affects the available next steps.

Platform payment
Clients generally pay through Fiverr when creating an order, and public payment terms restrict off-platform payment. Check the checkout total and current fees, not only the listed price.
Delivery
A delivery should match promised file types and outputs. Both sides should understand when an order is treated as delivered or completed and which review action applies.
Revisions
A revision is not automatically a new concept or larger deliverable. The order should distinguish included correction from new scope.

Ownership and permitted use

Read ownership language with the order's licensing choices and third-party restrictions.

Transfer trigger
Fiverr's public terms generally connect rights in delivered work with delivery and payment unless the Gig says otherwise. Confirm current wording for the order.
Commercial use
Some services distinguish personal and commercial use or offer broader rights as an extra. Check the selected package.
Third-party assets
Fonts, stock media, plugins, music, and AI-generated elements may carry separate terms. Ask for dependencies and needed licenses.

Cancellation and disputes

A cancellation can affect payment and use rights, so it is more than an order-status change.

Resolution Center
Eligible cancellation and order issues are generally handled through Fiverr's Resolution Center or customer support. Retain the order record and deliveries.
Refund route
The Payment Terms explain how canceled-order funds are credited and when another refund route may be available. Review the current version first.
Different disputes
Terms governing a claim against Fiverr may differ from a client-freelancer order disagreement. Read the clause for the correct relationship.

Fit and tradeoffs

A platform can be credible and still be the wrong operating model for a particular engagement.

Most avoidable problems begin with an incomplete record, a rushed selection, or an assumption that was never made explicit.

    Making packages differ only by price

    Give each package an observable scope boundary so clients can select accurately.

  • Client

    Buying before checking the package

    Read deliverables, exclusions, revision limits, licenses, and requirements; message first when fit is uncertain.

    Treating messages as invisible scope expansion

    Use a revised custom offer, order addition, or supported record when work materially changes.

    Redact personal information, use least-privilege access, and check current platform privacy practices.
